Browse data on Movebank
Researchers choose whether and how to share their data in Movebank. Even if you don't have your own data to work with, you can still browse studies, view tracks and even download data that owners share with the public.
Register and log in. While you do not need an account to search studies and view publicly available data on Movebank, logging in allows you to access more features, such as the option to contact study owners.
Search studies. You can browse and view studies in Movebank from the Tracking Data Map or the Studies page page:
- On the Tracking Data Map, search for studies by keyword or by selecting from the study markers shown on the map. Search for specific taxa using the Advanced Search option. Check the box next to only studies where I can see data to limit the results to tracks you can view on the map. Read more.
- On the Studies page, filter by study name and based on your level of access, for example "studies where I can see all data" or "studies where I can download any data". Read more. Remember that your search results will only include information that you have permission to view.
View animal tracks. If you have permission to view tracks in a study, you have a variety of options for how to view the tracks.
Contact study owners. Many data owners allow the public to view a summary of their study but restrict access to view tracks or download data. In these cases, you can contact the study owner to ask for permission to view the animal tracks or download the data.
Download data. If you have permission to download the data for a study, you can download data in a variety of formats for further analysis. For terms of use, see the study's License Type and License Terms, the general Movebank terms of use and Movebank's user agreement.
Explore further. See our page on teaching and training page for sample exercises and tips for using Movebank in the classroom, and advice on running collaborations using Movebank. Movebank's Env-DATA System allows you to annotate estimates of hundreds of environmental variables to tracking data.
